Analysis of Unexpected Leaks in AISI 316L Stainless Steel Pipes Used for Water Conduction in a Port Area

This paper clarifies the causes of a corrosion process observed in austenitic stainless-steel pipes, grade 316L, used for conducting freshwater port area. During pressure test installation, before it was put into service, about five months after its construction, loss detected due to leaks fluid contained and presence damage on wall tubes, some cases even passing through thickness tube. An analysis chemical composition pipe material carried out, as well semi-quantitative deposits defects, culture sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Kliguer medium stagnant waters within facility. All this makes possible conclude that fits so-called microbiologically induced (MIC), and, all probability, can be affirmed is promoted by proliferation (SRB).
